Portlandisms
In Portland:
- Every grocery store has a coffee shop - The grocery carts have cup holders for said coffee - Bike racks sometimes have crocheted covers on them - They make fun of Portlandia - Even church coffee is top-quality - The organic food stores have “extra-organic” asiles - It’s illegal to pump your own gas, they have an attendant take care of it all. You don’t...

Portland: America’s largest trampoline.
I feel like I should be writing something witty and insightful about moving halfway across the country with only a few suitcases and no leads on a job. I suppose the whole thing is a huge adventure, but to be honest, I’ve been too busy to really think about it. And I have a cold so my head is somewhere in the clouds.
The main observation...
matthew-leonard asked: On a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being the awesomest), how awesome do you feel Andrew Bird is?
Andrew Bird has the most wonderful ability to whistle in seemingly perfect-pitch.
His music is like slap watches, perfect for all occasions.
The Endless Summer is now on Netflix.

Three Weeks
I bought a new camera recently, but I didn’t want to buy a case to carry it around in (they’re all too bulky). I had been wanting to get back into sewing lately, so tonight I made this cloth “case” from an old Urban Outfitters bag I had kicking around.
Excuse my bragging, but I did enjoy myself while making it.

We have church backwards. It is not a place to go and put our best foot forward and display our Sunday best. It is a place to admit our brokenness and accept grace and mercy.
Or as Hans kung says:
“It deserves neither God’s mercy nor men’s rust. The church must constantly be aware that its faith is weak, its knowledge dim, its profession of faith halting, that there is not a...

Like a lean cowboy I forge into the sunset The glowing red west
My breakfast:
Avocado, spinach panini, scrambled eggs, and milk.
Why can’t I get in the mood to cook more often?
Tonight I stood at my window watching the snow fall in tiny, glittery specks and thought “this is what poems are for”.
Matthew 6:26- Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?
As God provides nests for birds, burrows for rabbits, and coral for fish, He will provide a home for me in Portland.
Change
Yesterday I was telling a friend how my family would be getting our Christmas tree today. I was describing the family dynamics: Joel will throw snowballs at Dad while he tries to saw down the tree, I will complain about how cold it is, my Dad will inspect every branch, needle, and pine cone of every tree we consider to make sure it is healthy, lovely, and festive all around, and my Mom will tell...
I ask for a moment’s indulgence to sit by Thy side The works that I have in hand I will finish afterwards.
Away from the sight of Thy face My heart knows no rest or respite, And my work becomes an endless toil In a shoreless sea of toil. Today the summer has come at my window With its sighs and murmurs, And the bees are plying their minstrelsy At the court of the flowering grove Now it is...

Personhood
I’m taking a Contemporary Moral Dilemas class this semester. It’s really just an ethics class, but for whatever reason they decided to give it a more fancy name. It’s been a very challenging course, but in a way I like. It makes me think. I’m in the process of writing a paper on abortion, a topic that centers around defining personhood. I’ve been reading a lot of...

Skin is more waterproof than GORE-TEX. Just think about it. It’s ironic.
God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time; Enjoying one moment at a time; Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace; Taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it; Trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His Will; That I may be...

I just finished what may have been the most intellectually stimulating paper I have ever written. I enjoyed it.
But I am so glad it’s over.

Motivation.
My psychology professor made the ignorant statement today that “Anger is the greatest motivator”. I won’t deny that it is a motivator, but whether or not it can be called the greatest is without a shred of doubt false. This professor, however, spends a lot of time trying to get the class angry. Angry, so we can do something, and change the world. Angry at the government, at the...
Do you carry the words around like a key or chain?
There is nothing better than coming home from the day to your parents’ wine tasting party with some of the coolest adults in the planet all sitting around your dining room table.
If Danger Was My Middle Name: Attraction →
emilydanger:
I wish it were semi socially acceptable to tell someone that you just think they’re good looking. Like, hey buddy, I find your face pleasing to look at. You look really handsome today. Simple. Done. Just because I think you are attractive doesn’t mean I want to marry you or have your babies or…
Billy Pilgrim has come unstuck in time.
I wouldn’t mind going for a walk right now. Like a walk across a mountain. Or a large field. Just a nice, long walk.
